For a large-scale wholesale bakery, having a reliable supply of ice can play an important role in day-to-day production. Mediterra Bakehouse had previously relied on purchased bagged ice, but the ongoing cost and reliance on an external supply led the business to look for a more efficient alternative.
Ice Systems worked with the bakery to assess its requirements and develop an in-house ice production solution, installing two sub-cooled flake ice machines on tote frames.
The Challenge: Moving Away From Bagged Ice
Before installing its own ice-making equipment, Mediterra Bakehouse was purchasing bagged ice for its operations. For a large-scale bakery, this represented a significant ongoing expense and meant relying on externally produced ice rather than having production available on site.
The bakery therefore approached Ice Systems to explore whether bringing ice production in-house could provide a more suitable long-term solution.
Ice Systems began by carrying out a comprehensive site survey to understand Mediterra Bakehouse’s requirements. Based on this assessment, two sub-cooled flake ice machines mounted on tote frames were selected as the appropriate solution. By installing ice-making equipment on site, the bakery could move away from reliance on purchased bags and instead produce the ice it needed in-house.
The installation has enabled Mediterra Bakehouse to significantly reduce its reliance on purchased bagged ice. The existing case study also reports improvements in quality and consistency, alongside cost savings for the bakery. For Mediterra Bakehouse, this means its ice supply is now supported by dedicated on-site equipment rather than relying as heavily on externally purchased bags.
Mediterra Bakehouse’s experience demonstrates why bakeries that regularly purchase significant quantities of bagged ice may benefit from reviewing how that ice is supplied.
An industrial ice machine allows a bakery to bring ice production directly into its operation rather than continually purchasing and handling bagged ice. The right solution will depend on factors such as the amount of ice required and how it will be used within the production process.
Ice Systems works with bakeries to assess their requirements and recommend an appropriate commercial or industrial ice-making solution, from selecting the machine through to installation and ongoing aftersales support.
